Kochi: A 60-year-old man, who suffered a heart attack while travelling on Kochi Metro , got his life back through a doctor’s timely intervention. The incident occurred around 10.30am on Aug 20. The 60-year-old passenger, a native of Tirur in Malappuram, suddenly started feeling uneasy and asked for water.

He soon regained consciousness and said he is from Tirur,” said Dr Sabaha, native of Vadakara. Dr Sabha Shabnam, an anaesthetist and critical care specialist at Indira Gandhi Cooperative Hospital in Kadavanthra, saved the passenger’s life by providing timely first aid. The doctor was travelling from the South Metro station to return to her apartment in Pathadippalam. When the Metro train reached near the Maharajas College station, there was considerable crowding in the train. The man, who was travelling alone, then collapsed to one side. Without wasting any time, she began administering emergency CPR to the patient. “When I reached, the man was unresponsive, no pulse and his eyes were rolled up, all symptoms of heart attack. Without wasting time, I soon started CPR procedure to ensure blood flow to the brain. By the time the train reached the Town Hall station, the patient regained consciousness and his pulse returned to normal. Kochi Metro Rail Ltd (KMRL) later felicitated Dr Shabnam at KMRL headquarters while hospital authorities honoured her on Saturday.
