Madurai: V O Chidambaranar Port handled its first crude palm oil vessel at coal jetty 2 on Friday after modifying the berth with pipelines linked to storage tanks about 5km away. Purohit said the operation marked another step towards diversifying cargo, strengthening port-based industries and improving the logistics ecosystem while supporting regional edible oil and food-processing sectors. Download the TOI App.

MT ZY Galaxy, carrying 15,000 tonnes of crude palm oil from Kunak Port, Malaysia, berthed at 10am. The vessel has a draft of 9.70m and an overall length of 143m. The importer has established four storage tanks in the port’s industrial zone and can manufacture 1,000 tonnes of refined palmolein daily for regional domestic consumption. The port has allotted about 1,633 acres for port-based industries, including power plants, chemicals, warehousing, food processing, edible oil, green hydrogen and its derivatives. It is seeking to expand manufacturing industries in Thoothukudi under the Viksit Bharat 2047 initiative.

Chairperson Susanta Kumar Purohit launched discharge operations. Discharge of the consignment is expected to be completed by Monday.
