New Delhi: Police arrested 193 people and registered 154 cases during a 72-hour crackdown under Operation Chakra conducted across various areas of north Delhi last week.
The operation, carried out from Aug 24 to 27, focused on cases related to illicit liquor, drug peddling, illegal possession of arms and gambling . 63 people were arrested under Excise Act and 10,122 quarter bottles of illicit liquor were seized, according to police. Under NDPS Act, 21 people were arrested and police seized 1.9 kg of ganja, 39.2 gm of heroin, 544 gm of charas, 240 buprenorphine tablets and 500 avil injections. Police also registered 22 cases under Arms Act and arrested 22 people. The seizures included three country-made pistols, two live cartridges and 22 knives. The action against gambling led to 50 cases being registered and 87 people being arrested. Police seized Rs 1.6 lakh in alleged stake money, two mobile phones and playing cards during raids at different locations.
Police said preliminary investigation indicated that the liquor was being brought from neighbouring states for distribution in Delhi. Police said the operation was part of its efforts to identify repeat offenders and curb street crime and other offences in the district. Police teams from different police stations and units were deployed at several locations for checking, patrolling and surveillance during the drive. A car allegedly used to transport the liquor was also recovered. Four stolen two-wheelers were also recovered. Police are continuing to investigate the cases registered during the drive.
