Accused minors to be quizzed full day today — Elderly man's murder

Kottayam : Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) on Monday granted permission to the police to interrogate for a whole day the three minor boys, who were apprehended in connection with the murder of an elderly man in Alappuzha and the alleged robbery of the victim’s ornaments.

A minor and two associates allegedly committed the murder at the instance of the victim’s 13-year-old granddaughter, who reportedly gave the contract for the killing, police said.

Police said their preliminary assessment attributes the act to the accused’s family background and social circumstances. Exposure to mobile phone content and depictions of crime in films may have also been contributing factors, they said. The juveniles involved have been lodged at an observation home for children in conflict with law. This appears to have given the juveniles the confidence and means to plan the crime and attempt to destroy evidence, they added.

The questioning will be conducted on Tuesday, said police.
