1 dead, 1 critically injured in Times Square stabbing; police kill suspect

At least one person was killed and another critically injured after a woman allegedly stabbed two people in New York City’s Times Square before she was fatally shot by police, authorities said. Police said the woman was armed with two large knives when officers encountered her. The suspect was taken to a hospital, where she died from her injuries, according to police sources. One of the stabbing victims, a woman, also died at a hospital, police said.

The suspect, described by authorities as apparently emotionally disturbed, fled north toward an NYPD substation, where officers confronted her. Bystander video showed several officers surrounding the woman, with at least one appearing to use a taser before she moved toward officers while brandishing the knives. Officers then opened fire. The second victim suffered life-threatening injuries. Police officials stressed that the incident does not appear to be terror-related and that the suspect appeared to be emotionally disturbed. Police cordoned off the area and closed part of Seventh Avenue as officers investigated the incident. Authorities have urged the public to stay away from the area.

The stabbings occurred at around 42nd Street and Seventh Avenue on Monday, according to police.
