From knowing to doing — AI’s next frontier: The wider industry impact

'We have a real chance of finishing on the podium': Goalkeeper Savita Punia

Long before computer algorithms tried to guess what we wanted, your local neighbourhood kirana shopkeeper was already doing it. They know which tea brand your family prefers, guess what snacks you will need for the weekend, and suggest a backup when something is out of stock. The lesson is simple: Understanding a customer is just step one. Real value comes from turning that understanding into action, reliably and right on time.

Artificial intelligence can bring that same personal touch to a massive scale, serving millions of people, products, and choices all at once. AI has already improved how we shop online by making searches smoother, recommendations better, and stock predictions sharper. But so far, these upgrades have only made separate moments smarter.

What is changing today is AI’s ability to link those moments together—thinking, planning, and taking action from the minute you search to the time your package arrives.

The right products have to be available, the inventory accurate and suppliers need to keep up. Orders have to be picked up correctly and drivers have to get them there on time. Essentially, every step affects the next.

This is where the future of competition lies. It will not belong to whoever builds the cleverest chatbot. Retail shows us why: one simple customer click triggers a massive chain reaction across stocks, suppliers, and delivery routes. We have spent years making each piece smarter. Now, the big breakthrough is making them work together as one smart team. As these AI systems start taking action on their own, trust becomes vital. A bad product recommendation is a mild annoyance. But when AI starts buying items, moving warehouse stock, or making business deals, safety also becomes a top priority. Clear rules, plain transparency, and real human control must be built in from day one.
