The university denied the allegation that a faculty member had slapped a student, saying the claim circulating on social media was “completely untrue”. The university said the incident involved “unauthorised, illegal and malafide involvement” of certain external elements. Security personnel and university officials acted promptly to ensure the safety of students and faculty members, and restore order, it said.
Students from various departments gathered on the campus after claiming that several students who had appeared for a special exami meant to help them avoid a loss of academic year had again been declared unsuccessful. The situation escalated following an alleged altercation between students and a faculty member. Members of a youth wing of a political party joined the protest. Students claimed that a professor had slapped a student, following which students allegedly retaliated. Reports of the professor being slapped several times also emerged. Police were called to the campus to bring the situation under control.
Pune: A students’ protest at MIT World Peace University (MIT-WPU) in Kothrud over the results of a special exam turned tense on Tuesday, with the university and students giving different accounts of what led to the situation.
