Madurai: Members of the southern district farmers’ association undertook a sit-in protest at the water resource department office in Tallakulam, Madurai, on Wednesday, seeking a Rs 2,000 crore fund for the Cauvery-Vaigai-Kiruthumal-Gundar linking project as against Rs 150 crore sanctioned. The project involves constructing a 262-km-long flood carrier canal from the Mayanur barrage on Cauvery river to divert surplus floodwaters to drought-prone southern regions. Farmers said a substantial financial allocation was required to ensure that the project was started soon and completed in time. Farmers said protests will continue until their demands are met.
