New Delhi: Delhi govt has directed all bus operators, including those running their vehicles registered in other states in the capital, to ensure strict compliance with passenger safety norms. Installing functional vehicle location tracking devices (VLTDs), panic buttons, fire extinguishers and first-aid kits has been made mandatory.
The directions, which follow the gang rape of a minor on a sleeper bus in Noida in Aug, have been issued by the transport department with a focus on ensuring the security of passengers, particularly of women and children, said govt. Transport minister Pankaj Kumar Singh said passenger safety was “non-negotiable” and that every bus running in Delhi must meet prescribed safety and operational standards, with essential systems and equipment remaining functional at all times. The operators have also been told to ensure assistance to persons with disabilities while boarding or alighting.
The department will take enforcement action to check compliance, with violations liable to attract penalties. Operators have been asked to ensure VLTDs and panic buttons are operational and easily accessible to passengers. Buses must also carry serviceable fire extinguishers and first-aid kits. In cases of indecent behaviour, molestation, eve-teasing or any other offence against a woman, bus crew must immediately inform police and take the vehicle to the nearest police station, post or PCR van.
