Salem district administration facilitates Rs 408.67cr loan: The wider industry impact

SALEM: The Salem district administration has facilitated bank loans to the tune of Rs 408.67 crore for 5,027 women’s self-help groups (SHGs) so far in the 2026-27 financial year, district collector K Elambahavath said.

The district has 20,756 SHGs, comprising 15,265 in rural areas and 5,491 in urban areas. Under TNSRLM, district has also released a Rs 1 crore Community Investment Fund to 67 SHGs and a Rs 6.6 lakh revolving fund to 44 rural SHGs. Separately, bank loans totalling Rs 198.30 crore have been extended to 19,579 women for livelihood activities, including goat and poultry farming, fodder cultivation, vegetable gardens, organic farming, seed production and urban self-employment ventures.

State govt has introduced schemes and allocated funds to SHGs to promote women’s economic independence, self-employment and sustainable livelihoods. They receive training, financial assistance and access to credit through the Tamil Nadu State Rural Livelihoods Mission (TNSRLM) and the Urban Livelihoods Movement. Employment camps, training programmes and awareness drives are being held at block and district levels to inform women about the opportunities.
