Kolkata Compassion Index Survey Report based on responses from over 2,000 residents was unveiled by state govt officials along with members of the organisation, Humane World for Animals, India, on Thursday. As per the survey, 58% of the respondents stated that they felt comfortable around street animals while 20% expressed discomfort and other 22% were neutral. Dogs and cats were identified as street animals of Kolkata by 64% of the respondents who took part in the survey. During the survey, 83% of the respondents expressed view that those who abuse animals should be punished. Notably, more than 80% support was recorded for including animal welfare education in the school curricula. However, the largest share of respondents (38%) reported having negligible knowledge about the regulations regarding street animal welfare. About 86% who were part of the survey felt that feeding strays is necessary while only 4% resisted or opposed to it.

Arkaprava Bhar, senior manager, govt affairs team, Humane World for Animals India, said: “The findings show us that Kolkata already has something important — a strong foundation of compassion for animals. Residents aged between 61-75 were found “very knowledgeable“ about street animal welfare guidelines while those in the 31-45 age-group had the highest share of respondents who were “not knowledgeable at all”. The 61-75 age-group had the largest share of “very unhappy“ responses to street animal relocation.
Kolkata: A survey by an animal welfare organisation has endorsed the fact that people of Kolkata are compassionate towards animals, especially strays. But it also highlights an important challenge: feeling compassion and acting on it are not always the same thing. The challenge is ensuring that people have the knowledge, information and practical tools to act on that compassion. ” The survey drew comparisons between age groups on their perception of animal welfare.
