NAVI MUMBAI: A 50-year-old man died at Fortis Hospital, Vashi, on Thursday, days after he was allegedly administered expired IV fluid at NMMC Hospital on August 31. The deceased, identified as Gopiram Bhiwaji Khadse, a sweeper at Shree Jagruteshwar Shiv Temple in Sector 7, was admitted to NMMC Hospital on August 31 with dizziness and vomiting. Dr Ravindra Mhatre, NMMC medical superintendent, said the hospital’s medicine inventory was checked on Thursday and the IV fluid administered to Khadse was found to have expired in July 2026.
He was later diagnosed with dengue, falciparum malaria and jaundice, according to hospital authorities. The viscera has been preserved and will be sent to the Kalina Forensic Laboratory for chemical analysis, while the histopathology report will be sent to Sion Hospital,” Mhatre said. “The doctor who conducted the postmortem has reserved an opinion on the cause of death.

Khadse was reportedly administered an expired IV fluid at NMMC Hospital. His condition deteriorated the following day, after which he was shifted to Fortis Hospital under the NMMC quota. NMMC commissioner Kailas Shinde has suspended three hospital staff members for alleged dereliction of duty in connection with the incident. Those suspended are staff nurses Surbhi Damodar Moraskar and Geeta Chandrashekhar Keni, and pharmacist Deepak Sampat Nalawade. They claimed their father developed itching and rashes after the IV fluid was administered and his condition worsened the next day.
Meanwhile, Khadse’s sons, Ajay and Vijay, had earlier protested at the NMMC medical superintendent’s office along with Bajrang Dal activists, alleging negligence by hospital staff. Earlier reporting noted: The patient, Gopiram Khadse, is now on ventilator support at Fortis Hospital, Vashi. He remained on ventilator support in the ICU for three days before succumbing to the illness on Thursday morning.
