Chikkamagaluru: The 1st additional district and sessions court, Chikkamagaluru, sentenced a 38-year-old man to life imprisonment for killing his nine-month-pregnant wife. Manjunath alias Manju, son of Lakshmangowda, a resident of Shankarpura, Chikkamagaluru, returned home drunk after work on Jan 14, 2025, around 6pm, and demanded food from his wife, Sharada . Judge Kiran Kini convicted Manjunath under Section 103 of BNS and gave him a life sentence while slapping him with a fine of Rs 75,000. In default of payment of the fine, he shall undergo simple imprisonment for 10 months.

The court also recommended that the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) grant suitable compensation to Sharada’s mother Siddamma of Shankarpura, the police said. He then dragged her by the hair, pushed her to the ground, punched her on the head and kicked her on her stomach, saying he would kill her and the child. Sharada sustained serious injuries and was admitted to Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences where she gave birth to a male child but succumbed to the injuries. Based on the complaint, Chikkamagaluru Women police had registered a case. Download the TOI App.
Inspector Abhay Prakash Somanala investigated and submitted a chargesheet before the court, while public prosecutor HS Lohitashachar argued the case.
