Officials remove illegal pipes used to divert water from the Tungabhadra Left Bank Canal in Gangavathi taluk
Koppal : The water resources department on Thursday removed illegal pipes installed by more than 10 farmers to draw water directly from the Tungabhadra Left Bank Canal in Dasanal area of Gangavathi taluk, following complaints of inadequate supply to downstream regions. The action comes nearly 20 days after water was released into the canal. Farmers alleged that supply from the Munirabad 0-Mile point towards Raichur remains inadequate, leaving many unable to begin paddy transplantation.
Stay updated with the latest Hubballi news. Officials found that farmers had drilled holes in the canal between the 20th and 24th mile stretches and fitted pipes to divert water to their fields. An excavator was used to remove the unauthorised pipelines. They also claimed distributary canals are not receiving sufficient water. Farmers alleged similar illegal diversions exist in Somanal, Mailapur, Chikkadankanal and Karatagi, affecting water availability in tail-end areas. Officials from the water resources department, Gescom and the police participated in the operation. Download the TOI App.
