New Delhi: Several roads near the airport, AIIMS , Connaught Place and Anand Vihar were inundated Friday, forcing many to wade through flooded stretches and traffic to crawl at several key points.
Waterlogging was reported at Terminal 3 underpass, an important access route for airport-bound traffic, with visuals showing a bus stranded inside the inundated tunnel. D-Block Sector-8, Dwarka, which falls under the jurisdiction of Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), was waterlogged too. People are stuck for 45 minutes.”
Waterlogging was also reported in Mundka, Public Works Department (PWD) sources said, adding that inputs were being forwarded to designated authorities for necessary action. Near Moti Bagh Metro Station, a sizeable portion of the road was flooded, while waterlogging was also reported near Hanuman Mandir close to ISBT. Traffic congestion was reported around Subroto Park and Connaught Place, while the Mahipalpur-Gurgaon stretch, including the flyover and toll plaza area, also witnessed traffic crawling.
The downpour once again exposed the capital’s drainage woes, with the airport corridor being among the worst affected stretches. Water quickly choked surrounding roads as vehicles were forced to slow down or take diversions. South Delhi also had its share of trouble. Roads around AIIMS, Mahipalpur and Basant Gaon were waterlogged, while Subroto Park saw large stretches submerged. Visuals showed water flowing down from the flyover onto the already inundated road, making conditions more challenging for motorists. Central Delhi was no better. Parts of Connaught Place, including its outer circle, were waterlogged, while Akbar Road was flooded. New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) data listed Kidwai Nagar East, Janpath Lane, Sarojini Nagar and Tansen Marg among other waterlogged locations. In east Delhi, areas near Anand Vihar Metro Station were under water, inconveniencing commuters. Commuters took to social media to flag the ordeal. A person posted, “Massive traffic jam on flyovers to airport. Many passengers are likely to miss their flights. What kind of traffic management is this?
Sources in the traffic police department said the situation on stretches to the airport, including T3 access road, was cleared within 15 minutes. Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee president Devender Yadav said despite chief minister’s assurance that desilting and cleaning of drainage systems would reduce waterlogging, the rain created tremendous inconvenience to the public. Neither PWD nor NDMC provided an official response about the waterlogging and traffic disruption. They added that traffic officials were deployed on the ground at other affected locations as well.
