Mumbai’s suburban rail network is set for significant expansion, focusing on new growth areas beyond the current railway infrastructure. A study by the Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC) will evaluate connectivity to emerging hubs such as the Navi Mumbai Airport Influence Notified Area (NAINA) and the Mumbai 3.0 initiative.
The assessment will identify potential new corridors, necessary capacity upgrades, and safety improvements across the rail network, aiming for completion by 2047. Additionally, the study will analyze projected passenger demand and future development plans to ensure the rail system meets the needs of a growing population.
Suburban rail travel demand will be assessed for 2030, 2035, 2040 and 2047 to determine where additional capacity and new connectivity will be required. Connectivity to emerging growth centres will be assessed as part of the study, alongside possible corridor extensions and the network capacity and connectivity that may be required through 2047. The study will identify platforms requiring extension for 15-car trains and examine the need for new terminals at high-demand stations. These measures form part of the capacity and service upgrade assessment across the suburban network.
