Madras high court has quashed a chargesheet against a Hindu Munnani functionary for posting a video on social media featuring a foreign pastor dancing with a woman, along with a comment telling Hindus to ‘think over foreign culture.’

The prosecution case is that in a video posted on his social media handle on June 18, 2023, wherein a foreign pastor was dancing with a woman, Kannan had given a caption stating that the video shows the original state of foreign religious culture, and calling upon all Hindus to think over it. “As far as the caption is concerned, the petitioner has stated that the video depicts the original state of foreign culture and therefore, Hindus should think it over. Based on the complaint lodged by a person from the Christian community, a case was registered against the petitioner by Kanyakumari district cyber crime police. Justice R Vijayakumar observed that there is no allegation that the video is a deep fake. The alleged caption is not meant for the Christians. It is addressed to the Hindus,” the judge observed. The continuation of criminal proceedings against the petitioner would only be an abuse of process of law, the judge observed and quashed the chargesheet.
