Heavy rain lashed Madurai on Friday night, leaving several areas: The wider industry impact

Heavy rain lashed Madurai on Friday night, leaving several areas flooded and slushy early in the morning, including those around Meenakshi Sundareswarar temple where the consecration ceremony will be held on Sept 17.

A senior corporation official said that a dedicated water pumping vehicle has been stationed near the temple area along with a crew of five to six sanitation workers. “Any complaints regarding sewage or rainwater overflows that are received near the city centre will be addressed immediately to reduce the impact on residents and visitors,” the official said. With more rainfall expected through the month, and large crowds expected for the temple consecration, devotees are demanding preventive measures to ensure that inconveniences are kept minimal for visitors. Among the worst affected areas on Saturday were the crowded Masi and Avani Moola streets which are still awaiting a modernised stormwater drain system.
