The protesters are demanding a complete overhaul of hostel infrastructure, withdrawal of the Central Kitchen initiative, better healthcare facilities and accountability for the deaths of 593 tribal hostel students over the past two years. A morcha will soon be organised in Mumbai demanding the resignation of the tribal development minister,” protester Prashant Gavande said. Another protester, Lalit Chaudhary, said mobilisation had begun across tribal areas. “We have started reaching out to families of ashramshala students and gathering support for the Mumbai march,” he said.
The decision came a day after CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke met the students and urged them to end the fast and take their fight to the state capital if they wanted their voices heard. Nashik collector Ayush Prasad, police commissioner Sandeep Karnik, tribal project officer Arpita Thube, DCP Monika Raut and former MLA J P Gavit visited the protest site and persuaded fasting students, including Rahul Pavra, Vivek Gavit and Laxmi Jadhav, to end their strike. They have also sought the resignation of tribal development minister Ashok Uike, and removal of department secretary Vijay Waghmare and commissioner Leena Bansod. “The administration will provide all help to the students to resolve their issues and also do what is required to forward their demands to govt immediately to find policy-level solutions. The agitation has drawn support from Lok Sabha leader of opposition Rahul Gandhi, Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA Aaditya Thackeray and CJP founder Dipke. “Despite ending the fast, the students remain firm on their demands and will continue the sit-in agitation. With the hunger strike ending but the agitation entering a new phase, tribal students have now shifted focus from the protest site in Nashik to Mumbai, where they hope a show of strength will force govt to address what they call a deepening crisis in tribal education.
