Fisherman Killed in Tiger Attack in Sundarbans’ Chamta Forest Monotosh Chakraborty | TNN Kolkata: A 35-year-old fisherman was killed in a tiger attack in the Chamta forest area of the Sundarbans on Monday morning, triggering fresh concerns over the safety of forest-dependent communities in the region. The deceased, identified as Gopal Dhali (35), was a resident of Tridibnagar under Jhorkhali Coastal police station in South 24 Parganas. He is survived by his wife and a minor child. The sudden tragedy has left his family and the entire village in shock.

His companions reportedly tried to fend off the animal by shouting and using sticks, but they could not rescue him completely from the tiger’s grip. Severely injured, Dhali was eventually pulled out of the forest. However, his injuries were so critical that he succumbed before he could receive medical treatment. Repeated incidents have once again raised questions about the safety measures in place for those who risk their lives daily to earn a living from the forest. Gopal had ventured deep into the forest on Sunday along with two companions to catch crabs — a primary source of livelihood for many in the area, according to local sources. On Monday morning, while they were working in the Chamta forest, a tiger suddenly pounced on him. The body has been sent for post-mortem on Tuesday.
