Nashik: With less than six months left before the March 2027 deadline for key Kumbh infrastructure works, the civic body will begin asphalting major Kumbh roads from Oct while targeting completion of most white-topping projects by Dec-end.
The Nashik-Trimbakeshwar Kumbh Mela Authority (NTKMA) has approved 32 major road projects worth over Rs 1,350 crore to improve connectivity for the massive influx of pilgrims expected in 2027. Around 66,000 tonnes of the material will be required for Kumbh-related road projects across the city.
Preliminary observations found the works to be broadly in line with prescribed technical standards, according to civic officials. Of these, nearly half are being upgraded through cement concrete white-topping while the remaining roads will be widened and resurfaced with asphalt. The next phase will see large-scale asphalting works begin soon after the monsoon. To avoid further setbacks, NMC has approached petroleum companies through state govt to ensure uninterrupted supply of bitumen. The road network forms a critical part of the broader Kumbh infrastructure push aimed at handling millions of pilgrims travelling between Nashik city, Trimbakeshwar and major transit hubs. Meanwhile, an expert team from IIT-Bombay has carried out an independent quality audit of ongoing concrete road works. The team inspected three major projects, including stretches on Trimbak Road and the Garware-to-XLO point corridor, conducting core-cut tests to assess concrete thickness and construction quality. The experts also reviewed issues related to stormwater drainage, monsoon-related challenges and traffic management during construction.
