Kanpur: The Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) marked the ninth anniversary of metro operations in the state on Saturday with an event dubbed ‘Metro Divas’. This celebration highlights the progress and impact of metro services since their introduction, reflecting UPMRC’s commitment to enhancing urban transportation in Uttar Pradesh.
The UPMRC commenced its first metro train service in Lucknow on Sept 5, 2017.
UPMRC managing director Sushil Kumar said that the successful nine-year journey of metro operations has been made possible by the hard work, dedication and teamwork of the employees. To mark the occasion, a special photo exhibition showcasing the journey and achievements of the metro, along with cultural programmes, was organised at Hazratganj metro station. Four Kanpur Metro employees were also honoured with MD Medals for their outstanding services. Senior officials from all three metro services of UPMRC: Kanpur, Lucknow and Agra Metro were present on the occasion. UPMRC employees were honoured with Gold, Silver and Bronze Medals for their outstanding performance. In the ‘Best Project Staff’ category, Anand Kumar Jha (section engineer grade-I/signalling & telecom), Kanpur Metro, and in the ‘Best Operations & Rolling Stock Staff’ category, Kamini Singh (section engineer grade-II/electrical, rolling stock), Kanpur Metro, were awarded the MD Silver Medal. In the ‘Best Maintenance Staff’ category, Renu Chaurasia (section engineer grade-I/signalling & telecom, Tele-AFC), Kanpur Metro, and in the ‘Best Supporting Staff’ category, Nihal Pathak (manager/public relations department), Kanpur Metro, were awarded the MD Bronze Medal. Cultural programmes were presented by metro employees and school students at the 9th ‘Metro Day’ celebrations. Students presented a play based on the theme ‘From Pushpak to Metro. A special photo exhibition showcasing the beauty of the metro, journeys and experiences captured through photographs was also organised.
He stated that UPMRC has recorded 30% higher fare revenue per passenger, 29% higher income per kilometre and 95% higher non-fare revenue per kilometre. In addition, its 75% higher signalling reliability and improved energy efficiency reflect the organisation’s operational efficiency and commitment to excellence. He further stated that preparations are underway to commence commercial services soon on the Balance Section of Kanpur Metro Corridor-1 (IIT–Naubasta), from Kanpur Central to Naubasta. Construction work on Corridor-2 (CSA–Barra-8) is also progressing at a rapid pace.
