Dakota Johnson is a popular Hollywood actress, best known for her work in the 50 Shades of Grey trilogy.
It’s a mid-century retreat, once designed by architect Carl Maston, that Johnson herself calls her “anchor”. Her Los Angeles home isn’t your typical Hollywood mansion. She gave a glimpse into her house in a home tour series by Architectural Digest some time ago, and her home is nothing less than a vintage retreat.
The button fern is a sturdier, more forgiving cousin, with small, round, glossy leaflets that look almost like a string of coins along each frond. It grows in lower light better than most ferns and doesn’t demand constant attention, making it ideal for shelves or low tables. This one is placed right next to its cousin on the kitchen slab in her home. The burgundy rubber tree brings deep, wine-coloured leaves and an upright silhouette that can single-handedly anchor a living room or reading nook. It grows best in bright, indirect light and only needs watering once the top layer of soil dries out, making it fairly low-maintenance for how dramatic it looks. This plant adds character to Johnson’s living room, placed right next to her sofa and center table. Peonies are the epitome of romantic, old-world charm, with their full, ruffled petals and heady fragrance. They’re technically a seasonal cut flower rather than a houseplant. A vase of peonies lines the entrance next to her dog’s portrait on a console table that instantly elevates a space, echoing the same warm, collected feel of her vintage home.
