Meerut : Two constables of UP Police have been arrested while two others are at large after an internal probe found that the four of them were allegedly involved in illegal detention, planting drugs and extorting around Rs 2 lakh from a 28-year-old jeweller in Shahjahanpur on Sept 4. All four have been suspended, police said on Monday.
Sundaram Kshatriya, the jeweller from Shahjahanpur’s Jalalabad area, alleged that at least four unarmed masked policemen in civvies called him near Saraiya Mor on Sept 4.
They then overpowered me and took me to Biryaganj outpost of the city’s Tilhar police station, where I was tortured and threatened with fabricated trafficking charges, unless I paid up,” Kshatriya, who runs a shop, said. Shahjahanpur SP city Devendra Kumar said that “a case was registered against constables Arun Chittauria, Pankaj, Tushar and Virendra Kumar for corruption and criminal intimidation after allegations made by the Shahjahanpur man was found true in our interdepartmental probe. “One of them had a black polyethene in his hand and they put it in my bike’s toolbox even though I opposed it. Pankaj and Virendra have been arrested.”
Once the amount is recovered, the victim can get it released via court.
The SP city added that the allegation of pouring petrol on the victim was “baseless”. However, how much money was taken by them is still a matter of probe. SSP Shahjahanpur Saurabh Dixit told TOI on Monday: “The personnel were found guilty after a detailed probe conducted by a CO-level officer.
