Nashik: The Nashik Municipal Corporation is drafting a detailed project report (DPR) for a 9-10km second parallel road along the Godavari’s right bank to decongest Gangapur Road in its bid to improve western Nashik connectivity and ease traffic ahead of the 2027 Simhastha Kumbh Mela.
The project complements NMC’s ongoing construction of a 4.5km parallel road between Mahatma Nagar and Motiwala College. The Rs 65 crore project has received Rs 55 crore in funding from Nashik-Trimbakeshwar Kumbh Mela Authority. Gangapur Road currently handles around 11,000 passenger car units (PCUs) per hour and has been identified by Maha Metro for a proposed Metro corridor linking Gangapur Road and Nashik Road. The stretch is considered among Nashik’s most congested roads after Dwarka Circle-Datta Mandir corridor on NH-60. NMC expects the new parallel road to divert a significant share of traffic from Gangapur Road, reduce travel time and strengthen the city’s transport network ahead of the influx of pilgrims for the 2027 Simhastha Kumbh Mela.
Traffic pressure on the corridor has surged due to rapid urbanisation and the growth of residential, educational, commercial and recreational hubs along the stretch. “Once completed, both the parallel roads are expected to significantly decongest Gangapur Road, one of the busiest corridors in Nashik,” an official said. NMC commissioner Manisha Khatri told TOI that the riverbank road would play a key role in reducing congestion on Gangapur Road. The second road along the riverbank will further help reduce vehicular traffic and improve connectivity,” she said. Officials said the lack of service roads, inadequate parking and roadside encroachments had further worsened congestion.
“We have already proposed the first parallel road from Mahatma Nagar to Motiwala College. The road also serves schools, colleges, hospitals, banks, restaurants and other commercial establishments, contributing to frequent bottlenecks. Adding to the load, Gangapur Road provides access to popular tourist destinations like Sula Vineyards, Soma Vine Village, Gangapur Dam, MTDC boating facility and Grape Park resort, resulting in heavy traffic during weekends and holidays.
