Chennai: A 60-year-old fisherman drowned after a fishing boat carrying four men capsized in rough seas off Kalpakkam in Chengalpet district on Sunday. His body washed ashore 10 hours later and was recovered by police on Monday.
About 10 hours after the incident, his body was found washed ashore on the beach maintained by Kalpakkam’s nuclear power facility. Police said the boat capsized due to rough weather. The deceased, Mari of Meiyur Kuppam near Kalpakkam, had gone fishing with three other fishermen. The three other fishermen, including Prakash , swam to safety and boarded another fishing boat in the vicinity. They returned to the shore and informed other fishermen that Mari was missing at sea. Fishermen from Meiyur Kuppam later went into the sea in another boat and searched for Mari, but could not locate him.
Kalpakkam police recovered the body and sent it to Chengalpet Govt General Hospital for postmortem. Police registered a case.
