Kochi: The Kochi corporation is rolling out a project to streamline waste collection and transportation to be implemented with the Rs 32 crore financial support provided by World Bank . In 2025-26, the corporation spent Rs 8.5 crore on private trucks for transporting waste to Brahmapuram waste treatment plant. So, we decided to procure 76 small trucks,” mayor Minimol said. We already have 15 refuse compactors. At the same time, we spend around Rs 4 per kg for disposing of plastic waste. So, we will procure 36 small trucks to directly collect plastic waste from commercial units,” Minimol said.

This leads to waste lying unattended for a long time, the mayor said. The corporation will procure vehicles to collect waste from secondary collection points and transport the garbage to the solid waste treatment plant at Brahmapuram without hiring private trucks for transportation. Mayor V K Minimol has already given anticipatory approval (approval given for a project by anticipating that the corporation council will give its nod) for the project. The corporation council to be held this week is expected to approve the project. “The project was originally proposed by the previous council, and they planned to procure several vehicles for waste transportation. After conducting a reality check, we reduced the number of trucks to be procured. As of now, we don’t have vehicles for collecting waste from secondary collection points. Haritha Karma Sena (HKS) members collect waste from primary collection points and stack it at various points in the locality. If one truck is bought for each division, the collection from secondary points will be smooth. “Moreover, we will procure six refuse compactor trucks, which can carry more than double the quantity of waste carried by a normal truck. Once we procure six more, we can avoid hiring private trucks,” the mayor added. The corporation will also undertake the collection of plastic waste from commercial units. “Now, the HKS members collect plastic waste from households as well as commercial units on behalf of the corporation. We are not getting any fee for collecting plastic waste from commercial units. There is also a plan to bring collection of all types of waste under the surveillance of My Kochi App. As of now, operations of sewage collection trucks are brought under the app. The mayor will hold discussions with the firm which developed the app to incorporate features to include the collection of plastic waste and food waste collection from commercial units.
