A hmedabad: In an alleged bid to break up a woman’s marriage and force his way into her life, a 36-year-old man launched a sustained campaign of harassment and character assassination that ranged from circulating her photographs, phone number and home address on WhatsApp to scribbling obscene messages on slips attached to currency notes and leaving them in public places across Ahmedabad. The accused, who was known to the woman and allegedly wanted to marry her after his own marriage ended, was arrested by Odhav police after investigators tracked him through footage from more than 100 CCTV cameras. The woman approached police on Friday, stating that since July 21 she had been receiving calls and messages from unknown numbers. Police then traced his movements by scanning footage from around 100 CCTV cameras before arresting him.

Police said that after his own marriage ended in divorce, he wanted to marry the woman and allegedly devised the campaign intending to end her marriage and create an opportunity for himself. The messages allegedly contained obscene remarks and were accompanied by her photographs and personal details. Police registered a case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for acts intended to insult the modesty of a woman. A breakthrough came when police scrutinised footage from near Janvi Arcade on SP Ring Road in Odhav, where one such note had surfaced. The footage allegedly showed a man arriving on an Activa scooter and dropping the note in the parking area.

The accused, an Odhav resident, was known to the complainant and had earlier helped arrange her marriage.
