Chennai: Railway police arrested two women from Karnataka for stealing a gold chain from a passenger at Chennai Central Railway Station and recovered the jewellery from them.
The police registered a case under Section 303(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and examined CCTV footage from the station. A team traced and arrested Pooja , 35, and Bharathi, 70, from Gulbarga in Karnataka. The women were produced before a court and remanded in judicial custody for 15 days.
Police said the women took advantage of the rush and removed the three-sovereign gold chain from him. The victim, Papathi Ramasamy of Erode district, boarded a train from Chennai Central railway station. As the train prepared to depart, he boarded a crowded coach. After noticing that the chain was missing, Papathi lodged a complaint with the Chennai Central Railway Police. During the investigation, police identified two women who were moving suspiciously around the station. Investigators found that they worked as daily-wage labourers and cleaners and had no prior criminal cases. Police recovered the stolen three-sovereign gold chain intact from them.
