The emergency treatment service is available only between 9am and 5pm

Currently, 10 mobile veterinary units are functioning in the district to provide doorstep emergency service. Farmers can access their services by dialling the 1962 helpline. JD(S) MLC CN Manjegowda recently raised the issue of whether the govt has noted the difficulties in handling night-time emergency veterinary care cases, given that the 1962 service operates only until 5pm. Minister for animal husbandry C Puttarangashetty, in reply, had told the House the state govt had submitted a proposal to the Union govt in Feb 2025, seeking approval to run the existing 275 units in two shifts — from 6am to 2pm, and 2pm to 10pm — and had also requested an additional 125 vehicles to improve coverage. Emergency treatment was provided to 1,434 animals in March and another 1,388 in April 2026 by the mobile units in Mysuru, which is an average of nearly 50 animals every day, according to the minister. Animal husbandry and veterinary services deputy director NM Siddaramu told TOI Mysuru has 10 mobile units operating under the 1962 helpline.

Because of their larger areas, however, he admitted that there were challenges in providing doorstep services in Sargur and HD Kote taluks. Mysuru: Mysuru, which has a cattle and livestock population of nearly nine lakh, urgently needs additional veterinary care services after dusk, especially in remote and border areas of Sargur and HD Kote taluks. However, this emergency treatment service is available only between 9am and 5pm. Farmer representatives Hosur Kumar and P Marankaiah claim ryots in remote and border areas are struggling to receive the service at night. However, the proposal was turned down by the Centre. Apart from this, the department also has mobile units in each taluk, which are operated on specific routes. Download the TOI App.
