While the university’s existing student aid fund caps assistance at Rs 10,000, the ‘Hope Fund’ raises the ceiling to Rs 1 lakh. The syndicate approved a grant of Rs 1 lakh to Anand Joshi, a PhD scholar at the university who was injured in a road accident , making him the first beneficiary of the fund. Kottayam : Mahatma Gandhi University (MGU) has introduced a new financial assistance scheme — ‘Hope Fund: One-Time Humanitarian Aid — to provide emergency support to students facing critical circumstances.
Officials said the scheme addresses a gap in the earlier student aid fund, under which PhD scholars were not eligible for assistance. The initiative was approved at the syndicate meeting held on Monday.
Applications will be assessed on the basis of the applicant’s academic performance and general conduct, while the family’s annual income must not exceed Rs 1 lakh. Under the scheme, a student can receive the fund only once during their tenure at the university. Applicants must also confirm they have not received insurance claims for the same incident or purpose.
