Waterlogging witnessed at Indira Gandhi International Airport after heavy rainfall lashed the national capital
NEW DELHI: Delhi airport operator DIAL has filed an FIR against 63 social media handles for allegedly circulating misleading and factually incorrect posts about flooding and waterlogging at the airport last week, including an old video from Dubai airport that was presented as footage from Delhi. On September 4, the arrival forecourt of Terminal 3 witnessed temporary water accumulation following heavy rainfall. DIAL said airport operations were not affected and the situation was resolved within 20 minutes, news agency PTI reported. Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) said it lodged the FIR with the Delhi Police against the 63 social media handles for allegedly circulating misleading posts depicting flooding and waterlogging at the airport and falsely suggesting disruption to airport operations. DIAL operates the national capital’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA), which handles over 1,300 flight movements daily. “In one of these posts, an old video of waterlogging at Dubai airport was claimed to be a video of Delhi airport,” DIAL said in a statement. “The circulation of misleading content by certain social media handles appears to be a deliberate attempt to create public mischief, damage the reputation of a public utility service, and generate unwarranted concerns among passengers,” it said, PTI reported. The FIR comes days after heavy rain had caused waterlogging at several locations around the IGI Airport area, including the Dwarka underpass connecting Palam with the domestic terminal area. The underpass was heavily flooded and a DTC bus was briefly stranded there, while other buses were diverted. Another underpass connecting Mahipalpur, Mehrauli and Vasant Kunj was also affected. The waterlogging had raised concerns over coordination among civic agencies ahead of the BRICS Summit, with different stretches around the airport falling under the jurisdiction of PWD, DIAL and NHAI. The development also came days after Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu reviewed waterlogging-related issues with relevant agencies and called for greater coordination among departments.
