Truck driver held
Chennai: A 23-year-old woman, who was riding pillion with her friend, died after a truck hit the two-wheeler on which she was travelling on GST Road near Chromepet late Tuesday night. She was staying in a rented room in Chromepet with her friend Sreeja , 24, who worked at a private company in the area. Around 10 pm, the two women left on a motorcycle to withdraw cash from an ATM. Yamuna was caught beneath the bike and was dragged for about 50 feet by the truck before it came to a halt. Police seized the truck and arrested its driver, Sathish , 27, of Kadaperi, on charges of rash and negligent driving.

Police identified the deceased as Yamuna of Manjakkudi village in Tiruvarur district. She had recently completed nursing training and came to Chennai seeking employment. When they were riding near the GST Road flyover in Chromepet, a truck travelling towards Velachery hit the motorcycle from behind. Sreeja was thrown away from the vehicle and sustained injuries. She was dragged along with the motorcycle for a distance before the truck came to a halt.
Sreeja was taken to Tambaram Govt District Hospital. Chromepet Traffic Investigation Wing personnel reached the scene, recovered Yamuna’s body and sent it to the hospital for postmortem.
