Rising ocean temperatures drive increased atmospheric evaporation, producing moisture-laden clouds that cause intense, unseasonal rainfall, destructive flash floods and sudden landslides throughout the Himalayan region, experts noted during the series of events held at various locations across Uttarakhand. In his message on the ocassion, chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami stated that the Himalayas are not merely a mountain range but the very foundation of our identity, culture and existence. He emphasised striking a balance between ecology and economy of the state. Meanwhile, members of civil society in Dehradun organised an event expressing dismay over felling of trees, sand mining and rising instances of disaster despite the claims that all works are being done in tandem with the scientific studies or after environmental impact assessment. Children expressed their sentiments via rap songs, poems and drama followed by sloganeering and singing by local residents Anoop Nautiyal, Himanshu, Era Chauhan, Shilpi and others. Addressing these mounting climate threats requires an urgent, multi-faceted scientific understanding paired with concrete policy interventions for which a report is being prepared and will be shared with the PM office, according to Padma Bhushan awardee environmentalist Anil Joshi. Indian Institute of Petroleum (CSIR-IIP), Dehradun, celebrated the occasion with the theme ‘Global Warming and the Himalayas’. Harender Singh Bisht, director, CSIR-IIP, highlighted the significance ofthe day, and acknowledged the contributions of environmentalists and activists towards Himalayan conservation.
