Chennai: A 21-year-old AC mechanic died after the motorcycle he was riding crashed into a road barrier near Ambedkar Memorial in Foreshore Estate late Tuesday night. He had married Harini , 19, a few days before the accident. His friend A Abdul Majeed, 18, from Mylapore, was a second-year polytechnic student.

Police said both riders were not wearing helmets. Police said Ajith and Abdul Majeed had consumed alcohol at Pattinapakkam Beach before leaving on the motorcycle. His friend, a polytechnic student riding with him, was injured. The deceased was identified as P Ajith of Mylapore. Ajith was riding the motorcycle and Abdul Majeed was riding pillion. They were heading towards Besant Nagar when the accident occurred.

As they approached the Ambedkar Memorial, the motorcycle lost its balance and crashed into a road barrier. Both men fell from the vehicle. Ajith suffered severe head injuries and died at the spot, while Abdul Majeed sustained injuries. Onlookers rescued Abdul Majeed and took him to a nearby hospital for treatment. Mylapore Traffic Investigation Wing personnel recovered Ajith’s body and sent it to Govt Royapettah Hospital for postmortem. Download the TOI App.
