A 57-year-old history-sheeter was shot in the leg and arrested after he allegedly attacked a sub-inspector with a machete near Batlagundu in Dindigul district on Wednesday.

Dindigul: A 57-year-old history-sheeter was shot in the leg and arrested after he allegedly attacked a sub-inspector with a machete near Batlagundu in Dindigul district on Wednesday. He faces more than 22 cases, including murder, attempted murder, robbery and theft. Police said Raja was out on interim bail after being convicted in a murder case in 2021.

When Raja attempted to attack him again, Prasath opened fire in self-defence, hitting him below the right knee, police said. Police identified him as Raja , alias Sikkanampatti Raja, of Sikkanampatti near Chinnalapatti. A special team led by sub-inspector Arun Prasath placed him under surveillance after receiving information that he could threaten a key eyewitness in the case. On seeing the officers, Raja allegedly brandished a machete and advanced towards them. Prasath fired three warning shots into the air, but Raja allegedly struck him on the left upper arm.

Batlagundu police registered a case and launched an investigation. Dindigul superintendent of police S Jeyakumar inspected the scene.
