Of these, the tenure of two judicial members — one each at principal bench in Delhi and western zone bench in Pune — and an expert member in Delhi was to end on Tuesday due to applicable age restrictions.
Pune: Supreme Court (SC) on Tuesday allowed three members of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) to remain in office as an interim measure “until fresh appointments are made”.
“The CJI-led bench said in view of the decision in principle having been taken by the govt to extend the tenure of the presently serving Chairpersons, Presiding Officers, Presidents (as the case may be) till 08.09.2026 or until they attain the maximum age prescribed under the Tribunal Reforms Act, 2021, it was allowing the Govt of India to proceed further accordingly. As such the extended term of the NGT members was to end on Sept 8, 2026,” he added.
“However, on March 9, 2026, another SC bench headed by the Chief Justice — in a petition by the Revenue Bar Association — took cognisance of the Attorney General for India’s proposal containing broad principles for extension of tenure of the Chairpersons, Presiding Officers, Presidents (as the case may be) as well as members of various tribunals,” Kulkarni said.
