A senior PCMC official said the contractor had been asked to submit an explanation by Monday. The civic body, the official said, directed to immediately ensure adequate safety measures and provide necessary protective equipment to the workers. “If there were no improvement, appropriate action would be taken against the contractor,” the official said.

The construction was under way on an upper floor.
