A court in Barabanki has sentenced six persons to life imprisonment for the murder of an elderly man and causing serious injuries to two others in a 2002 attack stemming from a longstanding dispute.
The accused, armed with lathis, bamboo sticks, firearms and country-made pistols, attacked Shripal (60), his family members and others outside their house. Three additional accused—Banshilal, Jagjivan and Chhannu alias Uday Pratap—were summoned under Section 319 of the CrPC during the trial. The court also imposed fine of Rs 20,000 on each convict.
Police concluded that the accused had formed an organised gang and submitted a chargesheet under the Uttar Pradesh Gangsters and Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act. The proceedings continued for years. Ram Sagar, Anil, Banshilal and Jagjivan died during the trial. The court held that the prosecution had failed to prove the Gangsters Act charge beyond reasonable doubt. However, it found Yadupal, Rajpal, Akhilesh, Ramu alias Abhishek, Shivraj and Chhannu alias Uday Pratap guilty of rioting, rioting with deadly weapons, attempt to murder, murder with common object, intentional insult and criminal intimidation.
