Additional chief secretary, medical and health, Amit Kumar Ghosh said 500 non-cadre posts would be created for re-employment of retired PMHS specialist doctors. Ghosh said the existing provision allowing re-employment of retired MBBS doctors up to 65 years would remain unchanged.

“The decision, approved by chief minister Yogi Adityanath , will allow retired specialists from the Provincial Medical and Health Services (PMHS) cadre to continue providing services amid a rising patient load in state hospitals,” they said. Deputy CM Brajesh Pathak said the move would help ensure continuity of specialist healthcare, particularly for poor and deprived sections of society. “Ensuring adequate availability of doctors, especially specialists, is essential in public interest and for continuity of medical services,” he said. Ghosh said using the experience of retired specialists alongside regular recruitment would strengthen the state’s healthcare system and improve timely access to quality medical care.
Recruitment will be through walk-in interviews on a contractual basis. Specialists retiring from the armed forces after completing their prescribed service age, as well as MBBS doctors, will also be eligible for re-employment under the provisions. Download the TOI App.
Temporary Appointments for Medical Specialists
Re-employed medical specialists will serve in temporary positions until permanent doctors are appointed or for a maximum of one year, whichever comes first. Their contracts may be renewed annually based on performance, conduct, medical fitness, and other established criteria, provided they do not exceed the age limit of 70 years.
New Regulations for Re-employed Medical Specialists
The government will allocate a maximum of 500 posts for re-employed medical specialists annually, based on recommendations from the Director General of Medical and Health Services. Once regular specialists are appointed, the non-cadre posts associated with re-employment will be eliminated.
Re-employed doctors will function as consultants and will not hold administrative roles or cadre designations. Their responsibilities include providing emergency and casualty services as dictated by hospital needs.
Importantly, these specialists are prohibited from engaging in private practice. They must prescribe only medications that comply with government regulations. Any breach of these conditions may result in immediate termination of their employment.
Additionally, the re-employment period will not contribute to pension benefits. Services can be terminated with one month’s notice if performance is deemed unsatisfactory, and doctors wishing to resign must also provide one month’s notice.
