Thrissur : An ailing 15-year-old male tiger was euthanised at Puthur Zoological Park in Thrissur on Thursday, after veterinary experts assessed that there was no possibility of improvement in its condition. There are currently 15 tigers at the zoological park.

Considering the severe pain and suffering caused by the advanced stage of the disease and based on the assessment of veterinary experts, euthanasia was carried out in accordance with the orders of chief wildlife warden, an official statement said. It was suffering from squamous cell carcinoma, a form of oral cancer. Despite treatment under the supervision of veterinary experts, the disease progressed and the tiger’s health deteriorated to the extent that it could no longer eat. Of these, only around five are permanent residents of the zoo, while the others have been brought there either for treatment or as conflict animals.

Named Nandu , the tiger was rescued from Wayanad and brought to the zoological park in Dec last year.
