Nearly 2,100 budgerigars—commonly called budgies or parakeets—were transported in seven cages on the train. The birds were transported on the Howrah-Mumbai Gitanjali Express and were supposed to reach CSMT at 10.45 pm on Sept 7, according to the complaint. But the train was delayed and reached CSMT at 2 am on Sept 8. Around 2,100 birds had been crammed into seven cages. They were transported in this manner for 32 hours and there was no caretaker with them.
Around six to seven of the birds lost consciousness. Mumbai: Govt Railway Police (GRP) at CSMT have registered an FIR after an animal welfare activist complained of inhumane and cruel transport of birds through cages on the Geetanjali Express. The birds had been crammed into seven cages in the parcel coach. They couldn’t move or fly and there was insufficient air, food and water for them. An FIR was then registered by the GRP.
