Bengaluru: A city court has sentenced a 49-year-old man to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment and fined him Rs 1 lakh for possessing and peddling opium. K Bhagirath Devasi of Devanahalli was caught with more than 2kg of the drug in Girinagar in July 2021.

Acting on specific information that Devasi would arrive on his motorcycle and sell opium near an Indira Canteen in Banashankari III Stage, then police inspector Deepak L and his team laid a trap. They intercepted Devasi and recovered a plastic cover containing over 2kg of opium from the vehicle’s dickey. Pronouncing the verdict, judge Ananda noted that the prosecution evidence established Devasi’s connection with the two-wheeler and the substance recovered from it. The court also observed that the evidence of ACP Srinivas of Jayanagar sub-division corroborated that of the police personnel who conducted the raid and apprehended Devasi. Download the TOI App.
