Kochi : The continuing power outage left the state govt in a tight spot on Friday

He was speaking at the event held at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium after inaugurating the ‘COR REN Expo 2026’ and the ‘Energy Conclave’. He said a 500 MW solar-battery storage system will be launched at Brahmapuram in Ernakulam.

Joseph said Antony told him that taking charge of the electricity portfolio is like ‘donning a crown of thorns’. At another function, minister said that with electricity availability declining in the state and demand rising sharply, the state govt is preparing to expand solar power generation and battery energy storage systems on a large scale to overcome the crisis. Similar projects are also progressing in Kasaragod and Malappuram, the minister said.

He was speaking at the inaugural session of the 18th state conference of KSEB Officer’s Federation at Kacheripady when the power outage disrupted his speech. He was recalling the warning given to him by veteran Congress functionary A K Antony. The power outage occurred while he was explaining how govt was trying to transform the crown of thorns into a crown of flowers, forcing him to declare the inauguration complete and leave the venue. The site and facilities are already in place. An electricity crisis cannot be fixed instantly at the flip of a switch. The minister urged the public to understand the realities and cooperate by making maximum use of solar and battery storage solutions.
