Gujarat’s public debt rose by Rs 55,475 crore in a year to reach Rs 4,30,320 crore in 2025-26

Ahmedabad: Gujarat’s public debt rose by Rs 55,475 crore in a year to reach Rs 4,30,320 crore in 2025-26, according to revised estimates presented by state govt in the legislative assembly on Friday. State’s outstanding debt stood at Rs 3,74,845 crore in 2024-25, according to govt reply. It increased by 14.8% to Rs 4,30,320 crore in 2025-26, reflecting an addition of Rs 55,475 crore to the state’s debt burden during the year. Gujarat paid Rs 27,095 crore as interest on its borrowings in 2025-26, an increase of Rs 1,491 crore over Rs 25,604 crore paid in 2024-25. The state repaid Rs 34,025 crore towards principal in 2025-26, compared with Rs 29,126 crore in the previous financial year — an increase of Rs 4,899 crore.
