A 34-year-old biryani shop owner in Mumbai reported being cheated out of Rs 5,500 by an individual posing as a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officer. The accused allegedly promised to facilitate the arrangement of a passport. An FIR was filed with the Sahar police on Thursday, who are currently in pursuit of the suspect.
The complainant, Ramkumar Pyarelal Bind, who runs Famous Chicken Biryani at Chimtapada in Andheri East, said in the FIR that the accused, Vikram Goswami, had visited his shop several times between Aug 26 and Aug 31. Bind received a passport-related message from a mobile number at 3.17 pm on Sept 1. However, when he visited passport office in Andheri on Sept 7, officials told him they had received no documents concerning his application.

Goswami identified himself as a CBI officer investigating a murder when he visited the shop around 11 am on Aug 31, according to Bind’s complaint. Goswami offered to arrange the passport for Rs 5,500 and took photocopies of Bind’s Aadhaar card, PAN card, school leaving certificate and electricity bill. He allegedly examined the shop documents and claimed Bind required a passport for the business. Bind alleged that Goswami refused online payment and accepted the amount in cash.
