Chennai: Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has urged more than six lakh property owners to clear their property-tax dues by Sept 30, with collection of ₹847.80 crore pending as of Saturday.
Of 14.15 lakh people liable to pay property tax in the city, 8.12 lakh have paid their dues without arrears. However, 6.03 lakh property owners are yet to pay their current and outstanding property tax, said GCC commissioner G S Sameeran. The civic body said that under the Tamil Nadu Urban Local Bodies Act, 2023, property owners must pay property tax every half-yearly period before the end of the respective half-year. Payments can also be made through the WhatsApp chatbot at 9445161913, at the automated payment facility at the GCC headquarters through cheque or demand draft, through tax collectors, or directly at zonal and ward offices.

It’s used to fund essential civic services, including maintenance of roads, streetlights and parks, solid waste management, public health and disease prevention work,” he said. “Property owners are advised to pay the dues by the end of Sept and contribute towards the uninterrupted delivery of essential civic services,” the commissioner added. “Property tax is one of GCC’s main sources of revenue. Failure to clear the dues within the stipulated period could attract interest on the outstanding amount from the following half-year. Property owners can pay through the GCC website, its mobile application, links sent through its WhatsApp service, or by scanning the QR code printed on property-tax receipts. Download the TOI App.
