The accused were allegedly preparing to send the quills outside the area for sale when they were nabbed, according to forest officials. DFO, Barabanki, Akashdeep Badhawan said the porcupine is listed under Schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act, making its hunting and trade illegal. He said porcupines are hunted not only for their meat but also for their quills, which are removed and smuggled for use in decorative items, including hairpins and accessories used in hair buns.

The accused were arrested by a team of the Dewa Forest Range on late Friday. Acting on the tip-off, the forest team laid a trap and arrested Sunil and Vivek. Their three aides managed to flee.
