Kanpur : Higher education institutions must redesign their curricula, teaching methods and evaluation systems to remain relevant in the age of artificial intelligence, experts said during a session on education and society at AI Manthan 2.0, held at Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj University (CSJMU) in Kanpur on Saturday.
Speaking at the event, Prof C Patwardhan of Dayalbagh Educational Institute said AI is transforming how students learn, acquire knowledge and prepare for careers. Aditya Nigam of IIT Mandi said that in a world where AI can easily generate answers, the ability to ask meaningful questions will become a critical skill. “AI should be used responsibly as a learning aid rather than being prohibited in classrooms,” he said.
Stressing the need for urgent reforms, he remarked, “We either adapt or we perish. He argued that traditional degree and credit systems based largely on classroom attendance are becoming inadequate as students increasingly learn through social media and AI-powered platforms. Prof Patwardhan called for capability-based assessment through open-book examinations, portfolios, seminars, vivas and practical demonstrations. He also advocated micro-credentials, AI literacy, ethics education and a stronger emphasis on reasoning and problem-solving skills. He urged universities to adopt adaptive curricula, hybrid learning models and project-based assessments. Adding a social sciences perspective, Mayurrakshi Chaudhari of FLAME University highlighted the societal implications of AI and warned against algorithmic bias and data discrimination. She stressed the importance of keeping humans at the centre of technological development and promoting responsible AI practices. The speakers unanimously agreed that the future of education lies in strengthening uniquely human qualities such as critical thinking, creativity, ethical judgement, adaptability and lifelong learning, enabling students to thrive in an AI-driven world.
