MEERUT: Three months after Guddu, a 25-year-old undertrial, was shot at in both legs during an encounter with police in UP’s Shahjahanpur for allegedly raping a one-year-old girl, he continues to wait for surgery on a fractured leg bone. Guddu was held on the night of June 9, and an alleged encounter took place in Shahjahanpur’s Khutar area. The arrest and subsequent encounter had sparked protests with more than 150 villagers surrounding a police post alleging that Guddu was falsely implicated and shot at in custody.
“He was hospitalised before being sent to jail,” Shahjahanpur ASP Diksha Bhavre had said. “The cops first arrested him and then shot him in the leg on June 12,” Guddu’s brother alleged. Guddu was arrested after a woman, who was washing utensils nearby, rushed to the spot on hearing a child crying and “found him with the infant”, according to police.
Police claimed Guddu had opened fire at their team.
